About Our Company

Benefit Strategies was founded in 1989 by Paul Smith and was headquartered in a small office in Bedford, New Hampshire. Paul spent the previous five years working with several third party administration firms and the group health insurance market. He gained a wealth of experience in a wide variety of administrative services and creative benefit plan design. When he founded Benefit Strategies, his original vision was to offer high quality Section 125 Plan administrative services to the hundreds of small and mid-sized companies in New England who were largely unaware of the real savings these plans allowed. Hands-on education of employee benefit brokers, employers and employees, coupled with technology driven, responsive administrative services and a reasonable fee schedule added up to success as Benefit Strategies rapidly grew.

In 1991, Benefit Strategies expanded its offerings to include Retirement Plan Design and administration, COBRA administration and multi-employer Trust administration.

Today, Benefit Strategies proudly serves over 1,100 valued clients and benefits brokers primarily in the Northeast region, but in many others states as well, ranging from Alaska to California to Florida and Alabama. We are now headquartered in two beautifully renovated historic buildings. Our primary location is in downtown Manchester, New Hampshire, and our other location is in Monument Square in Portland, Maine.

Much of the credit for Benefit Strategies’ success may be attributed to our caring, committed staff. Each member of our team brings a special combination of academic, professional and ‘real world’ experience to their jobs. Their expertise and commitment to thoroughness, creativity and responsiveness ensures customer satisfaction.

Benefit Design and Administration

As all employers know, they are expected to offer benefit programs to attract, retain and reward their employees. As such, there is no room for inefficient use of benefit resources. Thus, we provide proven strategies to reduce costs and improve communications to your staff. Designing a benefit program that promotes efficiency, flexibility, and responsiveness is our objective.


Community Service

Benefit Strategies is active in communities throughout New England with contributions and active participation in several fundraising events.

In 2001, we became actively involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, after a much loved employee lost her courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Benefit Strategies’ team “Diane’s Angels” has raised over $20,000 to date.

We are also very proud of the generous contributions our staff has made to the American Red Cross disaster relief funds following 9/11, the Southeast Asia Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
